In 2006 Blyth began IMPORTING coal from Eastern Europe to the refurbished Battleship Wharf

THEN that stopped, as it proved cheaper to import the coal to Liverpool and Glasgow and bring it to the power stations by rail. Then coal from Stobbswood open cast mine in Northumberland was brought to Battleship Wharf by lorry and loaded onto trains. The chutes shown were the last to be used to load coal directly into the holds of ships.
Since 2021 coal is no longer loaded at the port.
