The Old High Light and "The Obelisk" North Shields |
![]() |
Until quite recently the Old High Light or Beacon had a large obelisk on its South side. It seems that this may have been the site of a real beacon which was lit there to guide ships before the High and Low Lights were built.
(There are similar stone beacons on the Lawe Top at South Shields - see South of the Tyne pictures)
The Rising Sun pub (corner of Tyne St. and Beacon St.) and the obelisk were
demolished during an earlier regeneration programme.
(The later High Light may be seen in the distance on the left of the pub
in the right hand picture)
