Local 'Borough Bridge' Home

Built to replace a wooden bridge installed by LNER when they made the 'cut' (Borough Road) for the tramway in 1854, and a 'right-of-way' was required. This 80 year-old metal footbridge over Borough Road, North Shields, is due to be demolished. The local council claims that it would cost more to repair then to demolish and, despite protests, the go-ahead was given in February 2020. The bridge still stands in March 2020 as there are new 'rights-of-way' matters still to solve.
