The narrow river silts up quite quickly. Dredgers are constantly needed to maintain the required depth in the main channel and in the deepwater berths whatever the state of the tide. They fall into two types: GRAB dredgers with a bucket or 'grab', not unlike a JCB and SUCTION dredgers which effectively vacuum up the silt into an integral hopper or another vessel. | ||||||
