Originally owned by Lord Armstrong,  this was where large naval vessels were built after the yard at Elswick was found to be on the wrong side of the swing bridge which was too narrow to allow larger ships to pass down the river. The bigger 'hammerhead crane would be used to lift large heavy guns into the warships at what was known locally as : 'The Naval Yard'. The cranes are currently used to load umbilicals manufactured on site, for the oil and gas industry.
