Local Clocks

Before the mid 1800s ordinary people had no watches to tell the time when outside their homes. Towns, cities and even villages, took it upon themselves to provide clocks, often on the local church tower, but out of site of the churches too.

North Shields, or The Borough of Tynemouth as it was then, had several, some of which have long since disappeared and others are there if you look for them.
