ERECTED BY THE EMPLOYEES OF THE TYNEMOUTH GAS COY. TO COMMEMORATE THE DEATH OF THEIR FELLOW WORKMEN CHARLES ENGLISH AND JOHN MAINS WHO WHILST FOLLOWING THEIR EMPLOYMENT WERE ASPHYXIATED BY AN ESCAPE OF SULPHURETTED HYDROGEN GAS AT THE TYNEMOUTH GASWORKS ON THE 20TH OF JANUARY 1896 ALSO WILLIAM VICKERS FOREMAN WILLIAM VENUS MCGUIRE, DAVID TAWS WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE NOBLE ATTEMPT TO RESCUE THE ABOVE ALSO WILLIAM BROWN ONE OF THE RESCUE PARTY WHO SUCCUMBED TO HIS INJURIES AT A LATER PERIOD
