Marsden Rock, on the left, was a renowned arch formation until in 1996,
when the sea finally caused it to collapse.
The grotto is a
pub/restaurant on the beach, which uses caves under the cliffs and is accessed by a
lift from the cliff top. Of course it has a reputation for smugglers and
ghosts. The cliffs on this part of the coast are known as 'Leas' and
are boulder clay over
magnesian limestone. This leads to erosion and the production of what is
known as 'sea-stacks' as shown below. Souter lighthouse is seen in the
distance.
